Birth of a Champion — Joe Louis vs Max Schmeling | Glenn Beck Art Print
About the Artwork
"Birth of a Champion" by Glenn Beck captures the pivotal 1936 boxing match between Joe Louis and Max Schmeling. The artwork invites viewers to reflect on resilience and the journey toward redemption.
Story & Inspiration
On June 19, 1936, heavyweight champion Joe Louis faced Max Schmeling in a fight charged with symbolism — freedom versus fascism, Black versus white. Louis, confident and at the peak of his career, underestimated Schmeling. Schmeling had studied Louis’s tendency to drop his left hand after a jab and used that insight to defeat him by knockout in the 12th round. Beck’s painting depicts the moment when the referee stands over Louis, signaling his defeat, reminding us that learning from setbacks is essential to moving forward.
